FIRST PRIZE WINNER OF THE Gordon Russell FURNITURE AWARD IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE DESIGN COUNCIL AND THE ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW

Henry Long - 1984

The competition was organized by Ray Leigh of Gordon Russell Ltd in association with The Design Council and The Architectural Review. One of the main criteria stipulated in the brief was ‘a concept that can be developed, and ultimately marketed on a commercial basis [with] innovative ideas appropriate to the 1980s and beyond.’ Over 120 designs entries were received from 17 countries which were judged by a panel which included Sir Terence Conran, Emilio Ambasz, James Stirling, Ron Carter, Ray Leigh from Gordon Russell, Jonathan Glancey from The Architectural Review and Jane Priestman from The Design Council. The first prize, which was awarded to Henry Long, was prototyped, and displayed at an exhibition at the Design Centre along with the design drawings. There was also a financial award of ś5000 and in addition it was agreed that any royalties made would be paid, once designs went into production.
